Run It Back!!! BEBL Disciplinary Committee Rules the Running Rebels vs Defenders Game to be Replayed!!

Last Friday’s heavyweight showdown between the Running Rebels and Defenders was a one-sided 87-77 win for the visiting Defenders. The win pushed the Defenders up the standings to the #2 seed ahead of their upcoming game against San Pedro. While the game was mostly uneventful, it was puzzling how the league allowed both teams to play in white jerseys!!!

After the game was over, Running Rebels Head Coach Troy Gabb Jr. indicated that the game did play under protest. Ruling on the protest today, the BEBL Disciplinary Committee informed the BEBL Commissioner Christopher Mcgann that the game must be replayed at the earliest convenience.

The Committee ruled on the basis that both teams playing in white was not in accordance with Articles 6.1 and 6.2 of the BEBL By-Laws 2023, which requires teams to have a light and dark set of jerseys to ensure the integrity of play on the court.

Early indications from Running Rebels management suggest that the back match will be played late next week. More details to come!

BEBL All-Star Voting Now Open

The Belize Elite Basketball League All-Star voting is officially open and will close on Sunday, May 14th, at 11:59 p.m., giving fans the opportunity to vote for the 2023 BEBL All-Star Players Via the new BEBL Website.

The BEBL All-Star Game will take place on Saturday, May 20th at 9 p.m. inside the Russell Chiste Auditorium in Dangriga Town, airing on TNC and streaming live via the NexGen app.

Throughout the 13-day voting period, fans can vote for one player at each of the 5 different positions via the website at (https://elitebasketball.bz/allstarvote). You can only vote once per position per device. There are 40 current BEBL players available for selection.

The top 24 players will be selected. The two players with the most votes will be selected as Team Captains and will then select their players via live draft on the TNC sports show on Tuesday, May 16^th, 2023.

The Elite Basketball All-Star Game has become a major event in Belize’s sports calendar, drawing fans from across the country to witness the best players in action. It allows us to see unique matchups and teams and we get to see the best of the best go against each other.

How Fans Can Vote:

VIA WEBSITE: Access the ballots and vote through the website which can be accessed through any browser on any smart device. Fans can vote once per position from that particular device. Complete a full ballot selecting up to two guards and three frontcourt players.

Press Release: Hurricanes vs Tiger Sharks

In Belize Elite Basketball League (BEBL) games, competitors have only 40 minutes on the court to play and prove they are better than the other team. Referees have the challenging task of managing the game’s physical interaction not only by calling fouls but also by endeavoring to get it right consistently, for all the players, teams, and fans. The BEBL recognizes that good healthy competition on the court builds character, camaraderie, and community while providing a positive night of family entertainment. The unfortunate incident (s) that occurred during Friday night’s game between the Belize City Hurricanes and San Pedro Tiger Sharks fell short of that objective. During that game, a player from the Belize Hurricanes attempted to attack a referee, had to be restrained, and was ejected from the competition. The behavior of the player, Alex Carcamo, a seasoned veteran, was disappointing at best and definitely not the model behavior we encourage from our athletes, coaches, teams, and fans.

The BEBL has strict rules to restrict players but incidents still happen. The League condemns any act of aggression or attempts at intimidation against other players, officials, or fans. We aim to promote fair play, respect, and basketball development in Belize. The events, from last Friday night, are currently under review by the Office of the Commissioner and an announcement will follow shortly with the appropriate penalties and corrective measures.

Belize Elite Basketball League Season Commences

The Belize Elite Basketball League (BEBL) formerly the NEBL 2023 season commences on Friday, January 27, 2023. After an abrupt closure of the season in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, basketball returns to its highest level in Belize. The season will feature eight teams: the San Pedro Tiger Sharks, Orange Walk Running Rebels, Belize Hurricanes, Belize City Defenders, Belmopan Red Tigaz, Western Ballaz (of San Ignacio), Dangriga Dream Ballers, and Punta Gorda Panthers.

There are three games scheduled for the opening weekend. The season opener to be played on Friday, January 27, 2023, will feature the Belize City Defenders facing off against the Dangriga Dream Ballers. The game will start at 9:00 pm at the Belize City Center. Saturday, January 28, 2023, will feature two matches. At 7:30 the Western Ballaz will play against the Orange Walk Running Rebels at 7:30 pm at the Sacred Heart Auditorium in San Ignacio. While at 9:00 pm in Punta Gorda the Panthers will face the Belize Hurricanes. We encourage all supporters to come out and enjoy. Games will also be televised on TNC 10.
